Paramos of Costa Rica (Only in Spanish)

Maarten Kappelle, Sally P. Horn (Editors)

This book contains 36 chapters by 35 different scientific authors, who contribute their knowledge of aspects such as the history of scientific explorations, physical aspects of the paramo environment, quaternary glaciers, the history of climate, biogeography, the diversity of fungi, lichens, flora and fauna, ecosystems and their communities and the issues of conservation and sustainable development.

Paramo regions are frequently exposed to the action of fire, often irrationally induced by human beings. The recovery process is slow, and therefore the sustainable management of these areas is of the utmost importance to guarantee the conservation of their vulnerable endemic biodiversity and the preservation of their fragile soils and water resources, which are of vital economic importance, as well as the scenic and spiritual values that enrich human life in the paramo.
