Because of its natural features, significant measurements and conservation value, a surviving species in a stripped area has won this year’s “Exceptional Tree 2012”, presented by the National Institute of Biodiversity (INBio) in celebration of the National Tree Day.  The winner is  between 40 and 50 meters high, and measures 3.77 meters in diameter.

The specimen is located less than 30 meters away from the former railway track known as “El Bosque”, which was previously used to transport diverse merchandise and was abandoned more than 30 years ago.  This tree is considered a survivor, since the railroad workers rarely left any trees in its size near the railway track.

This year’s announcement attracted 44 candidates, and the criteria to select the winner included: height, tree’s crown, trunk’s circumference, historical value, esthetics, ecological relevance and conservation commitment.
