Biodiversity: Knowing about it and using it sustainably

Following seven years of intensive work, the National Biodiversity Institute (INBio) has completed two of the most long-lasting projects in its history. They were known as “Development of biodiversity resources” and “Development of the knowledge and sustainable use of biodiversity,” the latter followed by a second phase entitled “Toward a sustainable INBio.” Both were financed with support from the GEF/World Bank and the Government of the Netherlands. MINAE receives royalty payments

Last 10 October, the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica (MINAE) received its first royalty payments from an agreement for scientific cooperation between the National Biodiversity Institute (INBio) and Diversa, a US-based company. See more here >>>

 
     
     
 

Awards for INBio Web site

INBio received the "Best Costa Rican Web Site" award granted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, RACSA and ICE. Contest organizers singled out the INBio site because it met all the requirements that the jury had stipulated for the award, including content, operational and technical features. INBioparque inaugurates new exhibits

Thanks to the project "Virtual Biodiversity Learning Communities" supported by the Costa Rica - United States Foundation for Cooperation (CR-USA), INBioparque recently opened two new exhibition rooms. See more here >>>

 
 
 
     
 

Costa Rica - Korea Biodiversity Center

In September, INBio signed a letter of understanding with the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) for the purpose of setting up a Biodiversity Research Center in Costa Rica.
The purpose of the center will be to strengthen the internal capacities of both institutions, including technology as well as knowledge, and to develop projects jointly.

2005 Ojoche Award

During celebrations of National Parks Day last 26 August, the National Biodiversity Institute traveled to Tortuguero National Park for a special ceremony to grant its fourth Ojoche Award. See more here >>>

 
     
     
     
 

Pfizer donation to INBio
In August, the Pfizer pharmaceutical company, through its Scientific Institute, awarded the National Biodiversity Institute a grant of ¢13,000,000 (thirteen million colones) to fund continuing scientific research into biological control of the dengue-carrying mosquito (Aedes aegypti). Studies have been on-going through the Institute's Bioprospecting and Arthropods Unit. See more here >>>

Donation of bioliteracy stations
In September, INBio finished setting up digital stations for learning about biodiversity in 40 schools around the country, with support from the government of Spain and the Omar Dengo Foundation.
