Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Tenebrionoidea.


Description

Antenae with 11 segments, filiform or clavate, or with a 3 segment club. Antennal insertions exposed. Visible portion of procoxa projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally closed. Mesocoxae contigous to separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-4. Number of ventrites 5 or 6 without ventrites connate. Body length 1.2-6.9 mm. Elongate, usually ant-like in form, glabrous or pubescent. Head abruptly constricted posteriorly forming narrow neck. Eyes almost always entire. Penultimate tarsomere lobed.


Quick identification

Most Anthicidae are all quite small with an abruptly constricted head and a narrow neck. An English common name often used is "ant-like beetles". The subfamily Eurygeniinae (left) includes a larger, densely pubescent species, which are not common in Central America.
