Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Elateriformia, Superfamily Elateroidea.


Description

Antenae with 11 segments, filiform or serrate. Antennal insertions exposed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse with the trochantin at least partly exposed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally open. Mesocoxae separated by 0.4 to 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 5 with 5 connate. Body length 3.3-10 mm. Oblong, convex and densely setose with very long antennae. Tarsi with membranous lobes on 2-4.


Quick identification

Artematopodidae are easily recognizable by the setose body and long, slender antennae. In addition, the abdominal ventrites are all connate rather than free, and there are paired carinae on the prosternum which may have deep pits at the anterior ends (second figure).
