Description
Antenae with 11 segments and a 3 segments club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa globular or projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally closed. Mesocoxae contigous to separated by more than 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-5 but tarsomere 4 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 3 (pseudotetramerous). Number of ventrites 5 with 2 or 3 or 4 connate. Body length 1.4-10 mm. Body broadly ovate to oblong or elliptical and narrowed anteriorly. Antennae straight, not geniculate. Rostrum moderately well-developed; labrum not visible and palps reduced and immovable. Sides of prothorax not margined, except in Pterocolus. Tarsomere 3 lobed. Pygidium exposed.

Quick identification
Attelabidae, as used here, includes Rhynchinae, which are sometimes placed in a separate family. Like most of the basal weevil groups they have straight antennae, but they are usually distinguished from other basal curculionoids by having 4-segmented maxillary palps and 2 to 4 fused abdominal ventrites. Pterocolus (last) is peculiar in having sharp lateral margins of the prothorax.
