Description
Antenae with 11 segments and a 2 or 3 segments club. Antennal insertions concealed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally closed. Mesocoxae separated by 0.4 to 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 5 without ventrites connate. Body length 1.4-8.5 mm. Broadly ovate to oblong and somewhat flattened, pubescent. Always with paired, laterally-facing, setose cavities under head behind mouthparts. Pronotum often with sublateral carinae. Often with raised lines on first ventrite and metaventrite.

Quick identification
Biphyllidae are relatively diverse, but the body is always pubescent, and there is always a pair of laterally opening, setose cavities in the pregular region of the head (second figure).
