Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Cucujoidea.

Description
Antenae with 11 segments and a 2 or apparently 1 segment club. Antennal insertions exposed. Visible portion of procoxa globular to projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally open. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width to more than 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 4-4-4. Number of ventrites 5 without ventrites connate. Body length 3.5-8 mm. Elongate, cylindrical to flattened, pubescent or glabrous. Often with carinae on elytra and sometimes with grooves or cavities on pronotum. Antennal club compact.

Quick identification
Among the Central American Bothrideridae are several distinctive beetles with striate or carinate elytra and sometimes grooves or cavities on the prothorax. Sosylus (second figure) is a cylindrical tunnel inhabitant.
