Quick identification

Buprestidae are very distinctive beetles which are rarely mistaken for anything else. Those shown on the first 4 slides are all Agrilinae, which are the most likely buprestids to be misidentified. There is a large suite of characters varying little in the group and useful for identification. Some of these are the short, hypognathous head with vertically oval, finely facetted eyes, slender, more or less serrate antennae, broad prosternal process fitting into a large mesoventral cavity, well-defined transverse metaventral suture and solidly fused ventrites 1 and 2.
