Suborder Polyphaga, Series Elateriformia, Superfamily Byrrhoidea.

Description
Antenae with 11 segments, pectinate or flabellate in males. Antennal insertions exposed. Visible portion of procoxa projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin at least partly exposed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally open. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 5 with 3 connate. Body length 9-20 mm. Body elongate, stout, glabrous or pubescent. Head with sharply declined clypeal region and short, broad mandibles. Empodium large and multisetose as in Rhipiceridae.

Quick identification
Callirhipidae are mentioned when is discussed Rhipiceridae. As is mentioned, they have a similar setose empodium (second figure), but differ in shorter, strongly declined head, broad mandibles a well-developed labrum, 3 fused ventrites. Also, the male antennae are flabellate with very long processes on the antennomeres.
