Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Elateriformia, Superfamily Byrrhoidea.


Description

Antenae with 11 segments, filiform or serrate. Antennal insertions exposed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse with the trochantin at least partly exposed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally open. Mesocoxae separated by 0.4 to 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5 or 5-5-5 but tarsomere 4 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 3 (pseudotetramerous). Number of ventrites 5 with 3 connate. Body length 3-6 mm. Body ovate and lenticular (convex below and above), glabrous or pubescent. Tarsi with membranous lobe on 3, claws toothed. Head strongly declined and fitting into prosternum. All legs fitting into cavities. Hind margin of pronotum crenulate. Chelonarium.


Quick identification

Chelonariidae are easily recognized by the characteristic shape and the formation of a carina around the anterior portion of the pronotum, a ptilodactylid-like interlocking mechanism.
