Classification
Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Tenebrionoidea.
Description
Antenae with 8 to 10 segments and 2 or 3 segments club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse to projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally open. Mesocoxae contigous, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 4-4-4. Number of ventrites 5 without ventrites connate. Body length 1.1-3.3 mm. Body broadly ovate to narrowly elongate and flattened to convex, glabrous or pubescent. Antennal club well-developed with complex sensilla. Males often with horns or teeth on head and pronotum and with pubescent fovea on ventrite 1.
Quick identification
Ciidae includes small to minute beetles which are variable in form but often moderately robust or cylindrical. The antennal club is well developed with complex sensilla (last figure) and males often have horns on head and prothorax (as in scarabs).
