Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Cleroidea.


Description

Antenae with 11 segments, filiform or serrate or pectinate or clavate, or with a 3 to 6 segments club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed to at least partly exposed. Procoxal cavity externally open to closed and internally open. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5 or 5-5-5 but tarsomere 4 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 3 (pseudotetramerous) or rarely 4-4-4. Number of ventrites 5 or 6 without ventrites connate. Body length 2-15 mm. Elongate, flattened to moderately convex, pubescent, usually brightly colored, often with erect hairs. Tarsi with lobes usually on 2 and 3 or 2-4, 1 sometimes reduced.


Quick identification

Most Cleridae may be distinguished by the setose, often colorful body, clavate or capitate antennae, distinctly lobed tarsi, and projecting procoxae.
