Description

Antenae with 11 segments, filiform. Antennal insertions concealed. Visible portion of procoxa globular with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally closed. Mesocoxae contigous to separated by 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 6 with 3 connate. Body length 1-30 mm. Elliptical, boat-shaped. Metacoxae very large, plates absent.


Quick identification

Dytiscidae is the major aquatic adephagan group with a suite of swimming adaptations in the adult, including the streamlined form, very large hind coxae which lack the distinct plates present in Noteridae, and strong hind legs with swimming hairs.
