Author: John F. Lawrence, 2001.

Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Cucujoidea.

Description

Antenae with 8 to 11 or rarely 4 segments and a 1 to 3 segments club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa globular with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open to rarely closed and internally closed. Mesocoxae separated by 0.4 to more than 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open to closed. Tarsal formula 4-4-4 or 4-4-4 but tarsomere 3 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 2 (pseudotrimerous) or 3-3-3. Number of ventrites 5 or 6 without ventrites connate. Body length 1-7.5 mm. Broadly ovate to moderately elongate and highly convex to flattened, glabrous or pubescent. Antennae moderately long. Frontoclypeal suture present. Apical maxillary palpomere usually narrowed apically, rarely expanded and truncate. Prothorax often with paired basal pits joined by transverse groove. Ventrite 1 without curved lines. Trochoideus with only 4 antennomeres and long club.

Quick identification

Endomychidae is a diverse group, some members of which may be confused with Coccinellidae, Corylophidae, and Latridiidae. The Merophysiinae (first figure) are sometimes included in a separate family. Endomychids are often confused with similarly shaped Coccinellidae, however they can be distinguished from all coccinellids by the presence of a frontoclypeal suture, longer antennae with a more distinct club, and usually by lack of femoral lines on ventrite 1.
