Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Cucujoidea.


Description

Antenae with 11 segments and a 3 to 5 club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa transversae to globular with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally open. Mesocoxae separated by 0.4 to more than 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-5 or 5-5-5 but tarsomere 4 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 3 (pseudotetramerous). Number of ventrites 5 without ventrites connate. Body length 3.2-25 mm. Broadly ovate to moderately elongate, glabrous and colorful. Antennal club usually large and flattened. Tarsi usually with lobes on 3 or 1-3. All coxae moderately widely separated.


Quick identification

Erotylidae is primarily a tropical family including many brightly colored beetles which are easily placed. A few of the smaller, less colorful species may be recognized by the broadly triangular apical maxillary palpomere (last figure).
