Quick identification
Geotrupidae are relatively large and robust beetles with 11-segmented antennae and 6 ventrites. In Mesoamerica there are three genera, Athyreus and Neoathyreus which are pubescent with an excavation or horn on the pronotum, and Bolbelasmus which are similar to this North American species in a related genus (last figure).
