Description
Antenae with 11 segments, serrate or pectinate or clavate. Antennal insertions exposed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse with the trochantin at least partly exposed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally open. Mesocoxae contigous to separated by 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 4-4-4. Number of ventrites 5 with 3 connate. Body length 2-6 mm. Body elongate, pubescent. Tarsi 4-4-4. Large head with projecting mandibles and large labrum. Tibiae with long spines.

Quick identification
Heteroceridae are such a distinctive and invariable group that there is little chance of confusing them with members of other families. The antennae are short and club-like and the legs strongly spinose; either character will separate them from Mycetophagidae which some of them resemble because of the elytral pattern.
