Classification
Suborder Polyphaga, Series Scarabaeiformia, Superfamily Scarabaeoidea.

Description
Antenae with 10 segments and a 3 or 5 segments club. Antennal insertions concealed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse to projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally open. Mesocoxae contigous to separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 5 with 0 or 2 connate. Body length 4-5 mm (Aesalus) or 30-40 mm (Cantharolethrus). Glabrous or clothed with bristles (Aesalus). Antennal club geniculate and pectinate. Mandibles projecting; labrum exposed.

Quick identification
In Mesoamerica there are only 2 genera of Lucanidae: these are Aesalus, which are less than 5 mm long and clothed with stout setae, and Cantharolethrus which are more than 30 mm long and glabrous. Both have geniculate antennae with a pectinate club.
