Description
Antenae with 11 segments, filiform or serrate or pectinate or flabellate. Antennal insertions exposed. Visible portion of procoxa projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin at least partly exposed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally open. Mesocoxae contigous to separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 7 or 8 without ventrites connate. Body length 4.5-20 mm. Soft-bodied, pubescent, usually brightly colored, usually with carinae and network of cells on elytra and sometimes pronotum. Antennal insertions approximate. Elytra complete and not truncate. Tarsi usually with lobes on 1-4 or 2-4.

Quick identification
Members of Lycidae like Lampyridae, Cantharidae, and Telegeusidae are very soft-bodied and often brightly colored. The Lycidae are usually recognized by the elytra, which often have longitudinal carinae joined by cross-ridges or separated by rows of deep, window punctures.
