Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Chrysomeloidea.


Description

Antenae with 11 segments, serrate or clavate. Antennal insertions exposed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse with the trochantin at least partly exposed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally closed. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5 but tarsomere 4 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 3 (pseudotetramerous). Number of ventrites 5 without ventrites connate. Body length 7-12 mm. Stout bodied, glabrous or pubescent. Eyes large and deeply emarginate. Prothorax rounded laterally, without margins. Hind legs enlarged.


Quick identification

Megalopodidae appear to have characters of both Chrysomelidae and Cerambycidae. Most of the neotropical forms have enlarged hind legs.
