MYCTERIDAE

Author: John F. Lawrence, 2001.

Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Tenebrionoidea.

Description

Antenae with 11 segments, filiform or serrate. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally closed. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-4. Number of ventrites 5 with 3 connate. Body length 2.2-10 mm. Elongate and parallel-sided or narrowed anteriorly, slightly to strongly flattened, glabrous or pubescent. Head not abruptly constricted posteriorly. Eyes large and usually more or less protruding. Sides of pronotum rounded, without margins. Lobes on 1 or more tarsomeres.

Quick identification

Mycteridae have 3 connate ventrites like tenebrionids, but the procoxal cavities are open behind. The antennae are relatively short and usually serrate, and males often have a median setose patch or tubercle on ventrites 1, 2 or 3. Hemipeplinae are quite distinctive beetles, which were once included in Cucujidae because of the flattened form.
