NITIDULIDAE

Author: John F. Lawrence, 2001.

Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Cucujoidea.

Description

Antenae with 11 segments and a 3 segments club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse with the trochantin at least partly exposed. Procoxal cavity externally open to closed and internally closed. Mesocoxae contigous to separated by 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5 or rarely 4-4-4. Number of ventrites 5 or 6 without ventrites connate. Body length 0.9-8 mm. Highly variable, broadly ovate to elongate and slender, strongly flattened to highly convex, glabrous to setose or squamose. Antennal club usually well-developed, sometimes very large. Protibia usually with crenulate external carina. Elytra sometimes truncate, exposing 1 or more abdominal tergites. Cybocephalinae similar to Clambidae but without metacoxal plates.

Quick identification

Nitidulidae is a large and variable group characterized by having capitate antennae, strongly transverse procoxae with exposed trochantins (last figure) and always lack a maxillary galea. The minute and highly compacted Cybocephalinae (6th figure), asily confused with Clambidae, lack metacoxal plates and have broader, setose tarsi. Carpophiline (2nd figure) and Cillaeinae (3rd & 9th figures) have shortened elytra exposing more than one abdominal tergite; and some might be be confused with Staphylinidae. In general, the strong antennal club is sufficient to distinguish them from most staphylinids.
