Classification

Suborder Adephaga


Description

Antenae with 11 segments, filiform. Antennal insertions concealed. Visible portion of procoxa globular with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally closed. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width to 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 6 with 3 connate. Body length 1-6.3 mm. Elliptical, boat-shaped, very similar to Dytiscidae. Metacoxal plates well-developed mesally (unlike Dytiscidae).


Quick identification

The family Noteridae have most of the features of dytiscids, but differ mainly in the shape of the metacoxae, which have longitudinal plates concealing the bases of the trochanters.
