Description
Antenae with 10 segments and a 3 to 6 segments club. Antennal insertions concealed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse to projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally open. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 5 or 6 without ventrites connate. Body length 18-80 mm. Moderately elongate, parallel-sided, glabrous. Antennal club pectinate and curled. Mandibles projecting; labrum exposed. Elytra striate.

Quick identification
Passalidae are a very distinct group of large, glabrous scarabs with a pedunculate body, striate elytra and pectinate antennae which tend to roll up. Unlike all scarabaeoids except Trogidae, the mesocoxal cavities are laterally closed.
