Quick identification
Phalacridae are relatively small, ovate beetles, which are strongly convex and glabrous dorsally and flattened ventrally. They are the typical "small black, shiny beetle" and are often confused with members of many other families such as Leiodidae, Hydrophilidae or Coccinelllidae. Some distinguishing features include the relatively long antennae with a distinct 3-segmented club, globular procoxae, tarsomere 3 more or less lobed and tarsal claws toothed.
