Description
Antenae with 11 segments, filiform. Antennal insertions concealed. Visible portion of procoxa globular or transverse with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally open. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-4. Number of ventrites 5 with 2 connate. Body length 6-12 mm. Elongate, slightly flattened, glabrous. Head not abruptly constricted posteriorly. Prothorax with distinct lateral margins. Each elytron with apical spine. Membranous lobes on tarsomeres 1-4. Ischiomius with two species in Costa Rica.

Quick identification
In Central America Pythidae is represented by a single genus Ischyomius, which are relatively large, distinctive beetles with a short spine at each elytral apex. The placement of this genus is still in doubt and larvae are still unknown. They have often been collected in dead banana leaves.
