Quick identification

Rhipiceridae includes relatively large, distinctive looking beetles with pectinate antennae. The Callirhipidae are most easily confused with rhipicerids and both have a large multisetose empodium between the tarsal claws (second figure). Rhipiceridae differ from Callirhipidae in having a longer head with projecting mandibles, reduced, membranous labrum and free abdominal ventrites.
