Description
Antenae with 11 segments, filiform, or with a 3 segments club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa globular with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open or rarely closed and internally closed. Mesocoxae contigous to separated by more than 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-4 or rarely 4-4-4. Number of ventrites 5 with 0 or 2 connate. Body length 1.4-11 (2.2-6) mm. Elongate and slender or broad anteriorly and narrowed posteriorly, convex to flattened, glabrous or setose. Procoxal cavities closed only in Elacatis and tarsi 4-4-4 only in Ocholissa. Quick identification
Salpingidae are usually small in size and they always have internally closed procoxal cavities and laterally closed mesocoxal cavities. They lack the abruptly constricted head characteristic of the anthicid group. The genus Elacatis (first figure) is somewhat cucujoid-like with bicolored elytra and large eyes. The Prostominiinae (2nd figure) include a number of genera which have been misplaced in several other families. On the whole, they are small, glabrous and brightly colored, with distinctly clubbed antennae and concealed antennal insertions. Inopeplus (3rd figure) have very short elytra exposing a number of abdominal tergites. These beetles look very much like some Staphylinidae, particularly some species of Osoriinae; however, in addition to differences in the tarsi and genitalia, the similar staphylinids have the procoxae contiguous, while inopeplines have them moderately to widely separated. Salpinginae are shown at 5th and 6th figures. Platamops is setose and resembles some Silvanidae, but most others are glabrous.
