Quick identification

Scirtidae (formerly known as Helodidae) is a large group showing the greatest diversity in temperate regions. The small number of Central American taxa are small beetles (usually less than 4 mm) with a short prothorax, strongly declined head, filiform to serrate antennae, and lobed 4th tarsomeres. Species of Scirtes (right) have enlarged metafemora, and are capable of jumping.
