Classification
Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Cucujoidea.
Description
Antenae with 11 or rarely 9 segments, filiform or clavate with a 2 to 4 club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa globular with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open to closed and internally open to closed. Mesocoxae separated by less than 0.4 X coxal width to more than 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula 5-5-5 or 5-5-5 but tarsomere 4 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 3 (pseudotetramerous). Number of ventrites 5 with 2 connate. Body length 1.3-5.5 mm. Elongate, usually parallel-sided, somewhat flattened, pubescent. Sides of prothorax sometimes undulate, dentate or denticulate or with produced anterior angles. Tarsomere 3 or 1-3 usually lobed.
Quick identification
Silvanidae are often more or less flattened and pubescent and many have lobed tarsomeres. Unlike many other cucujoid families Silvanidae have concealed protrochantins and 5-5-5 tarsi in both sexes.
