Suborder Polyphaga, Series Scarabaeiformia, Superfamily Scarabaeoidea.


Description

Antenae with 10 segments and a 3 segments club. Antennal insertions concealed. Visible portion of procoxa projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally open. Mesocoxae contigous, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-5. Numberof ventrites 5 without ventrites connate. Body length 5-15 mm. Oblong, tuberculate. Antennal club lamellate. Labrum and mandibles exposed.


Quick identification

Trogidae are a distinctive group of small to moderately large, heavily sclerotized and tuberculate scarabaeoids, which differ from most other members of the superfamily by the combination of 5 ventrites, laterally closed mesocoxal cavities.
