Protocols:

The following are the main protocols selected by the Diptera TWIG for the present project.

Protocol for Setting Up Malaise Traps and Handling Samples

Protocols for Culicidae (Darlene Judd)

Protocols for Ceratopogonidae (Art Borkent)

Protocols for Dolichopodidae (Daniel Bickel)

Protocols for Asilidae (Eric Fisher)

Protocols for Sarcophagidae (Thomas Pape)

Protocol for Acalyptratae (Stephen Marshall and Matthias Buck)

Protocol for Acalyptratae (Stephen Marshall and Matthias Buck)

1. Mount all series from unusual habitats with good habitat data, ie. reared from bromeliad, collected from dead snail, high elevation, or other extreme environments.

2. Aim for a short series of each different size, habit, color, shape, etc. Learn to recognize and reject common Drosophilidae, Agromyzidae, Ephydridae, Chloropidae.

3. For uniform but diverse groups, such as Sphaeroceridae, mount about 50 specimens per sample, looking for any small differences to try and get as many species represented as possible.

4. Scan for known rarities such as scarce families, very rare groups such as Homalotrinae, Clusiodes, "McAlpine´s Flies", etc. (the authors should make "wanted" posters).

5. Pick out unusual or unfamiliar specimens.

6. Watch for wasp mimics, ie. very Ichneumonid-like Micropezidae.
